Kandinsky is a favourite program from Chrome Music Lab for all elementary students and we have loved exploring this program during our online music classes at Oak Learners. The programs can also be used for exploration in relation to different elements of music by purposefully asking students questions about what they hear and what they create, as I will explain in a breakdown of some of the programs below. Students can play and explore independently, as most of the programs are straightforward and can be used simply by clicking buttons and pressing play. The website is free, doesn’t require any downloads, and can be opened on a variety of devices. Have fun learning! Younger students can use these programs to explore elements of music such as timbre, dynamics, and tempo, whereas older students may want to extend their learning about music theory and notation. There are also many other websites and applications that can help students further extend their musical learning at whatever level they would like. Chrome Music Lab is an excellent, free program that can be tailored to elementary students of all ages, and can also be lots of fun for older students and adults as well. Making music at home can be lots of fun, and many students may be interested in learning more about different instruments we can use to make music, how to read sheet music of their favourite songs, or even how to write their own songs.
